Automated Laser Welding for New Energy Battery Electrodes

Automated Laser Welding for New Energy Battery Electrodes

In April 2025, SFX Laser received a request from a U.S. customer seeking an automated solution for welding new energy battery electrodes. Their goal was to replace traditional resistance welding, which caused issues such as large heat-affected zones, burn-through, difficulty with aluminum and copper, and high consumable wear.

Laser welding offered clear advantages, including high precision, low heat input, strong welds, and better automation capability.

After receiving battery samples, our engineer Henry Wang conducted multiple tests. Results confirmed that laser welding met all requirements in terms of weld quality, strength, conductivity, and efficiency.

Based on this, we developed a customized solution using the DLW-2000A enclosed laser welding system, featuring 7-axis motion, precise positioning, and automated control.

To meet production needs, we added key functions:

  • Pressing mechanism to secure electrodes before welding
  • Vision system for automatic position correction
  • Dust extraction system for clean operation
  • Enhanced safety features for stable automation

By May 2025, the machine was assembled and tested successfully. After remote inspection, the customer approved the system. In June, the equipment was delivered and performed reliably in production.

This project highlights SFX Laser’s ability to deliver custom automated laser welding solutions for advanced battery manufacturing.
